What Is Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent developed by Nous Research that runs on your own server. It is not a language model but an agent framework that combines models with tools: it can run commands, work with files and the web, and carry out scheduled jobs.

Its defining feature is persistent memory. It remembers what it has learned about you and your projects across sessions, and turns completed tasks into reusable skills. Through its messaging gateway, which connects to apps such as Telegram, Discord and Slack, you can manage the agent from your phone.

Why Run It on a Server?

For the agent to answer your messages at any time and never miss a scheduled job, it has to run on an always-on machine. On a VPS, Hermes Agent is reachable 24/7, and its memory and skills build up on the server independently of your personal computer.

Its ability to run commands is limited to a server isolated from your personal computer. Because the server is in Turkey, memory and chat records are stored in the country.

Models, Security and Resources

Hermes Agent is MIT licensed. It works with providers such as OpenRouter, Nous Portal, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, or with local models through Ollama, and you can switch providers with a single command. The model must support a context of at least 64K tokens. Model usage is billed by the provider.

We recommend allowing only your own user IDs on the messaging gateway and running commands in a Docker sandbox. Because model inference does not run on the server, 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM are enough; for browser automation or several channels we recommend 4 GB RAM.
