What Is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant (AI agent) that runs on your own server. It connects to messaging apps such as Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack and Signal, passes your messages to a language model, and when needed carries out actions for you, such as running commands, reading files, searching the web or running scheduled jobs. The project was previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot.
OpenClaw does not include a language model; it uses an API key from a provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic, or a local model. Model usage is billed by the provider.
Why Run It on a Server?
For the assistant to answer your messages at any time and never miss a scheduled job, it has to run on an always-on machine. On a personal computer, the assistant stops when the computer is switched off, and its ability to run commands reaches your personal files.
On a separate VPS, OpenClaw is reachable 24/7 and isolated from your personal computer. Because the server is in Turkey, your chat history and settings are stored in the country.
Safe Use and Resources
Because OpenClaw can run commands, its security settings matter. We recommend not exposing its management interface (gateway) to the internet, using an access token, accepting messages only from your own accounts and running commands in sandbox mode. Keep your API keys only on this server.
Installation requires at least 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, and takes about 5 minutes after the server is created. If you will use several channels at once or run demanding tasks such as browser automation, choose more resources.
