What Is Open WebUI?

Open WebUI is a ChatGPT-style web interface for chatting with large language models (LLMs) that runs on your own server. It connects to providers that offer an OpenAI-compatible API and to local models run with Ollama. You can switch between models from one screen and ask several models the same question at once.

The interface is multi-user: you can create accounts for team members and use roles to decide who can use which model. You can upload documents and ask questions about them, and save frequently used prompts as templates.

Why Run It on Your Own Server?

With hosted chat services, conversations and uploaded documents are stored on the provider’s servers. With Open WebUI, chat history, user accounts and documents stay on your server. When you use a cloud model through an API, only the current request is sent to the model.

Instead of a per-seat subscription, you can give your whole team one interface and pay for API usage as you go. Because the server is in Turkey, user accounts and chat logs are stored in the country.

Local Models or APIs?

Our VPS plans do not include a graphics card (GPU). The best experience therefore comes from using Open WebUI with the API of OpenAI, Anthropic or another OpenAI-compatible provider; 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM are enough for this.

You can also run small local models on the CPU with Ollama; responses are slower and you need at least 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. Open WebUI is distributed under its own license: it is free for your own use, while removing its logo and branding is subject to the license conditions.
